Hello, and welcome to CINAHL video tutorials from the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library of Yale University. In a sequence of tutorials, I'm going to show you how to effectively and efficiently search CINAHL— The Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Yale library patrons can access CINAHL from the Medical Library homepage. Like most other databases we subscribe to, you do have to be on the campus network to access CINAHL. If you at an off-campus location, you should connect either through the Yale VPN client, or the Library's Proxy Server to obtain a campus IP address. For more information about these remote access options, please follow the URL at the bottom of the screen. CINAHL is available on the EBSCOHost platform. So this is the CINAHL homepage. You can start a search right away from this interface, or you can create an account with EBSCOHost to take advantage of the personalization features, such as saving your searches permanently, or creating an alert, et cetera. I am going to show you those features later in this series of tutorials. To create an account, click here. On the next page, click on "Create a new Account" and fill out this form. Since I already have an account, I'm not going to do it here. Instead, I'm going back to the previous page, and sign in. Okay, I've successfully signed into EBSCOHost. Notice that the logo here becomes "My EBSCOHost"... and I can sign out or sign in as a different user from here. So let me give you an overview of this interface. Right here is the search box. Below the search boxes are a lot of "Search" and "Limit" options. I will be talking a lot about these when I actually do the search demos. Up on the top are a series of useful links. First of all, I can find a list of publications indexed by CINAHL by clicking "Publications". Here are all the 'A's, and I can move to other letters by clicking on them. Each of these records here not only gives me a title, but also the time span of the publication that is covered by CINAHL. For instance, for the journal "AACN Advanced Critical Care", CINAHL covers from 2006 to present, so I know if I'm looking for the reference of an article in a journal published before 2006, I won't be able to find it. The CINAHL headings are the controlled vocabulary system used in the CINAHL database, much like the MESH headings from MEDLINE. Don't worry too much about these jargons now, as I'm certainly going to talk about them later in this series of tutorials. In short, using controlled vocabulary allows you to do more precise and exhaustive searches than your typical keyword searches. If you mouse over the "More" link, you can see a drop-down menu of more search options. I want to specifically mention the "Citation Matcher" search. This is similar to the popular single citation matcher feature in PubMed only that this is matching CINAHL records, rather than PubMed records. It allows me to quickly locate a known citation. So if I have a known article, this is the fastest way to locate its record in CINAHL. Moving on to the right-hand side, the "Folder" link is where you access most of the personalization features, such as your "Saved Searches", "Saved Alerts", "Saved Records", et cetera. I will certainly talk more about these features later in this series of tutorials. All right, this has been an overview of CINAHL— The Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature on the EBSCOHost platform. In the next tutorial, I'm going to be showing how to formulate your research or clinical question for an effective search in CINAHL. I'll see you next time.
